Ai Ono Solo Exhibition - MATOYA

2024

So Koizumi designed the exhibition space for ceramic artist Ai Ono's solo exhibition "Passage," held at Gallery MATOYA in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Ai Ono's works are characterized by refined forms and expressions created through unique glazing experiments. Both aspects are crafted with a strong awareness of light and the resulting shadows, resulting in pieces that appear differently depending on the lighting environment. Because these qualities require direct visual engagement to be fully appreciated, So Koizumi designed a pathway named "Passage" within MATOYA that directs towards the distinctive window light. This setup allowed visitors to experience the changing light while engaging with each work individually.

The main passage of the exhibition venue, "Passage," is composed of eight pieces of furniture of the same shape arranged in a row. Although the furniture is of a minimal design, the details of the joints create a light and delicate impression. The side panels are fixed with screws to spot-welded round nuts, creating light frames in the gaps on the left, right, and bottom. This detail reflects the "light and shadow" element that Ai Ono is conscious of during production. The tabletops are polished aluminum, carefully finished by hand to gently reflect light, shadow, and the colors of the works. This furniture was designed specifically for this exhibition, but all components can be disassembled for compact storage. The specifications and sizes of the tabletops can also be modified to suit future exhibitions at MATOYA.
