Presence
2025
A bench used in the main studio of a photography studio (Kuppography Takanawa Studio).
This stainless-steel bench embodies the studio’s philosophy of being “a museum where people are the main focus.”
Its sculptural form, where straight lines and curves intersect, goes beyond mere functionality as seating and asserts a strong presence as an object within the space. The cold, hard expression of stainless steel, when met by a person sitting on it, accentuates human warmth, allowing the presence of the sitter to be reflected more richly.
Rather than relying on complex forms such as free-form double-curved surfaces, the design is created by sculpturally carving a primitive cylinder.
This approach generates natural curves while also ensuring feasibility in the fabrication process.
