As
2025
“As” is a series born from revisiting the origins of asphalt as a material and reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens.Historically, asphalt has been used as an adhesive that binds different materials together. While today it is strongly associated with road paving, its essence lies in its fundamental function of “connecting.”By approaching asphalt as a material that mediates between disparate elements, this series explores new possibilities for expression.
In Japan, asphalt was used in the Jomon period to fasten together wooden shafts and stone arrowheads for hunting. Interpreting asphalt in the same way—as a mediator that connects disparate materials—I aimed to unite metal, stone, resin, and other diverse materials through asphalt, and to elevate them into a furniture collection that includes stools, side tables, and lighting pieces.
Some materials, including asphalt, are shaped and finished by my own hands. I consider the act of creating the material itself as part of the making process, refining structure and texture through repeated cycles of experimentation and design. Through this exploratory process, I investigate the fundamental energies inherent in the materials and the relationships that emerge between disparate elements.
